Mosaic Approach

"The Mosaic Approach is a research framework which aims to play to the strengths of research participants, drawing on expressive languages to facilitate about experiences and communicating these ideas with others (Clark, 2011, p.31)."

Our group went to a center and wanted to know, "What does it mean to be in this place?" Through this blog, you will see several visits and observations of what the children are trying to do. It is important to know what the children are trying to express, as they are in this place for hours, day, months, and some for even years. Our first observation was many empty rooms, not welcoming, children sitting quietly, sad faces, and crowded areas. We introduced ourself to the Host Teacher and she smiled, nodded, and said "do what you got to do." We felt as a group over powered and uncomfortable to be in this center. When trying to communicate we felt this process wouldn't go as easy as we had hoped. We were being watched every move and felt the clock was ticking fast. We were always interrupted and put down. We kept our heads up and tried our best to ignore all the initial feelings. We were adult after all and changing the center wouldn't be fair to the children. We then had circle time with the children and explained we were going to do an activity where they were able to use cameras. The children were so happy and were immediately told to be silent by the Host Teacher. We began to take pictures as our first stage. Come see the center from the children's eyes!
